Rock Climbing, Friends, Wesley Fellowship
Happy Monday everyone!
We're off to a cold, overcast start to our day our here in Colorado. I actually don't mind the overcast days, because they don't happen very often as we seem to be typically abundant in sunshine. But enough about the weather! Quite a bit has happened since I last posted, so I will try and fill you all in as best I can!
Thursday (24th)
Thursday night I decided to check out the Boulder bookstore. This bookstore carries both new and used books, so I was on a quest to find the book "Catching Fire", preferably a used paperback (I want to read it again before the movie comes out). I got to the bookstore, and like most bookstore trips, I knew this trip could be dangerous. I don't know about you, but every time I walk into a bookstore, I feel the need to own every book on the shelves, regardless of whether or not I'd actually enjoy reading the book. I mosey around a bit and eventually go upstairs to where a majority of the used books are. I get up there and find the section where my book is supposed to be, but they unfortunately only had the used book in hardcover, which ended up being the same price as a new paperback, so it was kind of pointless. I noticed a couple guys sitting up there talking, and as I'm looking my book, one of the guys comes up and starts talking to me about the series. I ended up chatting with the two guys for a while, and one of them (Andrew, a professional triathlete) gave me the name of his website. (Yay, potential friends!) After I went to the bookstore I stopped by Chipotle for dinner then headed home.
Friday (25th)
Friday I had the day off and then babysat later that night so Amber and Eric could go to a Ski Ball event. I just did usual "day off" things like go to the gym, run errands, walked to the frozen yogurt shop, a little homework...the usual.
Saturday (26th)
Saturday morning we had some delicious waffles for breakfast. I put some pumpkin butter on mine which is surprisingly quite yummy. After breakfast we all made a trip to Costco. Amber said it perfectly when she said, "Welcome to sensory overload". Um, no kidding! I've been to Costco once before when I was out in Arizona, and I've also been into Sam's Club a few times back in Minnesota, but you forget how huge and overwhelming it is until you're in the thick of it. It was a fun experience nonetheless. After our Costco trip we stopped for lunch at Mountain Sun Pub and Brewery on our way home.
The day before I had gotten in touch with Andrew, and he invited me to go rock climbing at Boulder Rock Club later that evening with him and a kid he mentors. I think the last (and only time) I'd ever been rock climbing was back in elementary/middle school...but I managed to survive! It's actually pretty fun. If the membership wasn't so expensive I'd consider joining. My favorite part was that they had these automatic belays so you could just climb by yourself. After we finished rock climbing we went out for pizza slices at Nick-n-Willy's, which was delicious. Andrew and I also went out a little later to this club type scene and danced for a little while. It was a fun social night out, and it was definitely what I needed.
Sunday (27th)
Sunday morning I decided to go back to Mountain View UMC for the adult bible study. This week I went to the typical bible study, which was hosted by a guest speaker from a church across the road. He is doing a 5-week study on "The Greatest Generation", based off the book written by Tom Brokaw. The class, like the last class I went to the previous week, was filled with people from this "greatest generation" which started in the 1920's. This also meant there was (what I like to call) the "greatest gap" between my age and the rest of the class. I actually thoroughly enjoyed being in that class though; it was like a mini-history lesson. It was fascinating being able to hear first hand accounts from people about what it was like back then and comparing it with today's world. I am excited to go back next week and learn more. After the class, I decided to skip the traditional service this week because I was going to the Wesley Fellowship closer to campus later that evening in hopes of finding friends closer to my own age. Between bible study and the Wesley Fellowship, I did my usual trip to the gym, and I also got outside to run a 5k (in 28:57min). It was a gorgeous day; near 70 and sunny!
When it neared 5:00pm I gathered my stuff and headed out. *Sidenote: I was pretty proud of myself, only having passed this place one time by accident, that I could find it without using the GPS on my phone! Anyways, I arrived there and sat down and waited for the service to start. A nice lady invited me to come sit with her and her daughter, Amy, and we got to talking and realized that we had a lot in common! Amy and her parents are from Minneapolis (yay, MN!). Amy's moms name is Ann, and so is mine. Amy's middle name is Jane. Hey, that's my name! Amy's full name is Amelia; I have a cousin and great grandma with the name Amelia. Amy also has a great grandma with the name Amelia. What's also funny is both our moms are shorter, have shorter hair, wear glasses, and wear Christopher Banks clothing. The similarities are pretty fun to compare, but it was more fun getting to know Amy and her mom and learn more about them. Hopefully we will be able to get together at some point and hang out. :) The service was very nice. The message was given by a student who's a part of the group and that was very moving; he used a lot of baseball/softball analogies and stories to tie his message together, so I thought that was pretty cool. After the service we all went downstairs and had an Italian type dinner and cake. Overall, I am very glad I went, because if I hadn't I probably wouldn't have met Amy or any of the other people there. I'm excited to go back again next week!
Monday (Today! 28th)
Today is going well so far! I started typing this blog post this morning when Torsten was napping, and it is now afternoon. Our day has been steadily chugging along. It's still overcast and actually a little rainy. Again, I still don't mind, it just means that we can't get outside for a walk (sad...), but there's stuff to do inside, too. After work, I'm going to go to the yoga class at Anytime Fitness again. I invested in my own yoga mat, so hopefully I can start doing some yoga at home throughout the week.
Well...as you can tell, I've had a fairly productive past few days! It was so great to experience rock climbing, learn about historic events, meet new friends, and more! I look forward to seeing what the next week will bring. :)
